WHS Board considers “The
Hope Academy”
The Waller
ISD Board of Trustees recognized a number of outstanding student
achievements during its regular monthly meeting Dec 11. Those recognized
were Waller High School (WHS) theatre students Nathan Roub, Chelsea Stanley,
Silvia Martinez, Trae Adair, Amanda Parmer, Brittany Lemons, and Abby Fry
for their winning in their designated events at the Texas Thespian State
Festival; Holleman Elementary School fourth grade students Jacob Hart and
Seven Quiroz for winning in Region IV’s holiday card contest; and an anonyms
citizen for constructing a covered batting cage at WHS (this acknowledgement
was presented to the Board by WHS head baseball coach Robb Jensen). WHS
Grant Coordinator Joy McCaffety and WHS teacher Donna Leslie presented
information on “The Hope Academy,” which is a proposed school within a
school program at WHS. If approved, it will allow a flexible and self-paced
academic environment to students who have applied and met the criteria for
the program. Students would have the option of coming to school four hours
in the morning, four hours in the afternoon, or all day, but hours would be
flexible to meet the needs of individual students. McCaffety and Leslie
proposed the use of A+nywhere curriculum currently being used for summer
school and night school. “The Hope Academy” is geared toward at-risk high
school students and would allow WHS to better serve the needs of all
students. After further research, the Board will vote on the program during
its Jan 8 meeting.
Important dates noted were: Dec 20 - Jan 2 – Christmas Holiday and Jan
8 – Regular Board Meeting. |
