Waller ISD Board recognizes summer graduates

The Waller ISD Board of Trustees recognized several outstanding students during its regular meeting Sept. 10. Among them were five Waller High School (WHS) class of 2007 graduates: Jennifer Lanning Santiago Lopez, Cristobal Martinez, Brianda Robles, and Bryant Rodriguez. The graduates were presented with their diplomas and a sunflower (the class of 2007’s flower). The class of 2007’s yearbook was also presented to the Board. The 2006-2007 WHS student yearbook staff including Kaitlin McCormick (editor), Heather Mitchell (design editor), Lindsey Carter, Jessica Clay, Kim Eckermann, Alyssa Robertson, and Karli Tipps, advised by teacher Brandi Morley, earned the “Gallery of Excellence” award from publisher Walsworth Publishing Company. Waller Junior High teacher Becky Elbert was recognized for achievements in becoming one five finalists in the Region IV Education Service Center Teacher of the year competition. The WHS Jazz Band was also honored for their achievements earning fifth place in the nationwide Yamaha Music and Arts Center Spring Swing Jazz Contest. Jones Elementary School (JES) volunteers Bob and Paula Williams and Lowe’s Home Improvement were also thanked for their work at JES. Finally, the Board was presented with a cake and thanked by various community members for their hard work on the recently passed bond election.
     In regular agenda items, the Board accepted a business agreement with Standard Equipment Company (SEC) to help improve the metal trades vocational courses at WHS.
     The Board discussed the selection of appraisal district directors 2008-2009. This item will be presented as a regular agenda item during the next regular meeting of the Board scheduled for Monday, Oct. 8.
     Before the meeting began, a public hearing was called to discuss Goods in Transit by WISD Assistant Superintendent for Finance Mike Marcus.
     Important dates noted were: Oct. 8 – Regular Board Meeting and Student Holiday (Parent Conference Day/Columbus Day) and Oct. 17 – Possible Special Called Board Meeting to discuss Facilities Planning.
