Waller ISD Board recognizes 12 Retirees

During a regular meeting of the Waller ISD (WISD) Board of Trustees held June 9, the Board recognized 12 retirees: Maria Banda, William Boone, Julia Hofferek, Maralyn Mahshie, Sylvia McEntire, Roxie Seber, Michael Strouse, Cleola Walker, Dianne White, Prescilla Yell, Borthea Bertleff, and Mary Alice Cure. Each retiree was presented with Seiko wall clock. These 12 represent a combined 284 years of service to public education in Texas, 209 of those years dedicated solely to Waller ISD.
The Board also recognized Waller High School (WHS) All-District softball honorees, the WHS UIL Academic team for their successful year, and school resource officers Anthony Martin and Steve Underhill for 10 years of service each to Waller ISD.
In the regular agenda, the Board regrettably accepted the resignation of trustee Paul Wood who was elected mayor of the city of Waller on May 10, 2008. Wood has served as a member of the Board since 1998 and is an honored past president. He will be greatly missed. According to Board Policy, upon resignation of a member, the Board may fill the subsequent vacancy by appointment until the next regular Board election which will be held in May 2009. The Board appointed long time community member Louis Tucker who took his oath of office thereafter. The Board then approved nominations for TASB delegates Robert Carvell and alternate Shaun Nelson.
In information items, Dwayne Trahan of SHW Group presented a review of construction projects approved in the May 12, 2007 bond election and Waller ISD Assistant Superintendent for Finance Mike Marcus reviewed progress on 2008-2009 budget planning and information on a waste water system for the new elementary school.
Future Board items noted were 2008-2009 salary schedule, construction contracts, out-of-district transfers, consideration of economic development application, and board training/team building.
Important dates noted were: June 26 – Special Called Board Meeting, June 30-July 4 – WISD offices closed, July 14 – Regular Board Meeting, July – ground breaking for new elementary school, Aug. 11-13 – new teacher orientation, Aug. 14 – convocation for faculty and staff, Aug. 18-19 – district staff development, and August 25 – first day of school.
