Waller ISD offers District-Wide Dual Language Enrichment Program

Waller ISD is excited to announce that the Dual Language Program, currently utilized at Holleman Elementary, will be offered district-wide in fall 2006. WISD first implemented the program with kindergartners at Holleman in fall 2002.
     Statistics reflect that students, now in their fourth year of the Dual Language Program, show amazing achievement on TAKS. At Holleman Elementary this school year, 100 percent of students who began the program in 2002-2003 passed TAKS Reading. Of that 100 percent, 30 students received TAKS Commended Performance; 10 had perfect scores. Six of the 30 who received Commended Performance and one perfect score were posted by native Spanish speakers who took the English version of the TAKS test.  Ninety-two percent of this same group of students passed TAKS Math on their first attempt.
     As a result of the Dual Language Program’s success, WISD, led by Superintendent Richard McReavy, has decided to expand the program to each of its elementary school campuses. Like the students who began the program in 2002-2003, native English and Spanish speakers who will be entering kindergarten may elect to be in the Dual Language Enrichment Program. It will grow with students through each grade level and, at this time, the program is set to continue through twelfth grade. 
     The District-Wide Dual Language Enrichment program is an innovative way to provide students with the opportunity to learn a second language. It provides native English, and Spanish speakers, a chance to learn and be exposed to each others language and culture through academics, activities, and conversation.
