Dr. Mary Johnson
visits HES second graders.
March 13, Dr. Mary
Johnson, a veteran educator with 43 years of experience who is now
retired, made a special visit to Sharon McReavy’s second grade class at
Holleman Elementary. As an educator, Dr. Johnson taught everything from
kindergarten to elementary education courses at the university level,
but she said second grade was her favorite. She talked to the students
about her experience as teacher and brought “The Popcorn Book”, by Tomie
de Paola, to read to them. Using the book, she taught them a number of
interesting scientific and historical popcorn facts. She also brought
popcorn snacks for the children to enjoy and a necklace made of popcorn.
She noted that in some Indian tribes long ago such a necklace was made
and presented to the woman in the tribe who was the most respected. The
students asked that she give it to McReavy! “What an honor!,” McReavy
said. The students also used Dr. Johnson’s visit to practice their
professional skills. When Dr. Johnson arrived at Holleman, three of
McReavy’s students met her with a sign that said "Welcome, Dr. Johnson”
and greeted her by introducing themselves, shaking hands, and inviting
her to come to their classroom. At the conclusion of her visit, another
student walked with her back to the front office area. |
