WHS Bulldog Basketball
ends successful season
Waller High School’s Bulldog
basketball team ended their season Feb. 19 with a tough 60-56 loss to Elgin
in round one of the playoffs. The team was 9-4 in District play and 20-10 on
the season.
This year’s team had a lot of experience with 11 seniors and one
sophomore in the line up. 6’5” senior Jonathon Roberts was the leading
scorer and rebounder. 5’8” senior Jerome Brown was a big surprise this
season as one of the Bulldog’s top scorers shooting well from the perimeter
and playing solid defense. Other seniors were 5’11” Stephen William at point
guard, 6’8 ½” Isaac Watson at center, 6’ Trent Thomas, 5’10 Elijah Jones at
guard, 6’2” Dexter McKee at post, 6’2” Joplo Bartu at post, 6’ Jermery
Luckett at post, 5’10” Erin Sims at point guard, and 6’ Kenny Croomes on
defense. A lone sophomore, 6’ Josh Dorsey at post, rounded out the line up
of veterans and created essential energy.
Early in the season the team won the Sealy Tournament and took bronze
in a tournament at Clear Creek. Throughout the season, the Bulldogs won over
Stratford, Brookshire, Scarbrough, Texas City, Crosby, Smithville, Yoakum,
Lamar Consolidated, Brenham, Taylor, Dallas God’s Academy, Montgomery,
Livingston, Willis, and Caney Creek. They ended up second in District 18-4A
behind number one seed Huntsville and ahead of number three Montgomery.
As the Bulldogs battled Montgomery for the number two seed in 18-4A,
they traveled to take on the Bears Jan. 4 in the two teams first match up of
the season. WHS brought home a 63-52 win. In the second match up, they
capitalized again winning 54-40. The past four years the Brenham Cubs had
dominated 18-4A, this year the Bulldogs beat them twice; 77-69 and 63-61.
The Bulldog’s playoff appearance in boys basketball is the first since
2004. In 2002, head coach Larry Hendrix led the team to the regional finals,
one step away from state. This was Hendrix’s 24 years as the head coach.
Hendrix’s coaching staff includes Mike Smith, Rodney Loewe, and Jacob Roy.
“This team really embraced winning. They played hard and their success
shows it. I’m proud of them,” said Hendrix. |
