Waller ISD Board Recognizes Fallen Heroes Memorial Contributors

WALLER ISD – During the regular meeting of the Waller ISD Board of Trustees held on October 13, the Board recognized Waller High School Homecoming Queen, Brittany Moody, and the Homecoming Kings, Miller Pierce and Tyler Bain, who both tied for the Homecoming King crown.  The students were nominated and voted for the honor by their Waller High School class peers.

The second recognition for the evening recognized J.C. Umland and Don Stewart.  Both gentlemen provided a substantial contribution to fund the Waller ISD Fallen Heroes Memorial that is displayed at the Waller ISD Stadium.  The memorial is made of Texas red granite, stands 9 feet tall and 4 feet wide, and has interior spot lights that beam upward beyond the top of the memorial. The memorial is a tribute to service members who attended Waller High School and died as a result of a combat related injury, held as prisoners of war, or missing in action.  Also recognized was Tommy Bertrand, the Stewart Builders Project Manager, and Jeanine Slaughter, Director of Waller ISD Facility Planning and Construction, who both provided excellent project management work overseeing the construction of the new stadium.

The final board recognition for the evening recognized Waller High School Art Teacher and Yearbook Sponsor, Lea Kohn.  Kohn passed out Waller High School color printed yearbooks from the previous school year to each board member and to the Superintendent.  This marks the second year in a row that the yearbook was published in full color.

The consent agenda considerations included resignations, employment, leaves of absence, staff transfers, disbursements, budget change requests, tax refunds, staffing requests, and purchase of Read 180 program for Turlington Elementary School.

In the regular agenda, the nomination of the 2010 Houston-Galveston Area Council board representative and alternate was discussed.  The Board nominated Louis Tucker as the board representative and Shaun Nelson to serve on the council as an alternate.

In information items, the Board reviewed a list of the possible Waller County Appraisal District Board of Director nominations provided by Waller County.  After the review of nominations, the Board heard Waller ISD Campus Improvement Plans presented by each school Principal.  This year has been the Waller ISD greatest academic achievement year.  5 of our 7 Waller ISD campuses are rated “Recognized” or “Exemplary” by the Texas Education Agency, and all Waller ISD schools earned the federal Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) rating.  The final information items on the agenda were the 2010-2011 Budget and the discussion of the Waller ISD boundaries.

Future Board items include 2010-2011 Budget Preparations and Waller ISD Staffing Audit.  Important dates noted were: October 23 – Waller ISD Campus Recognitions; November 9 – Regular Called Board Meeting; November 23-27 – Thanksgiving Holiday.  For more Waller ISD information, visit www.wallerisd.net or call 936.931.3685.
